CLASSROOMS/LECTURE ROOMS
The Department of Mathematics which also houses the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is situated at the faculty area of the university campus.
Most Classes for the Department takes place in the Central Classroom Block(CCB) just opposite the Department building. It has five dedicated classrooms for the undergraduates and postgraduates. Three of the undergraduates classrooms have a capacity of over 120 students and the last has a capacity of a little over 50. These classrooms are equipped with Public Address(PA) systems for large class attendance.
The Department has a Library stuffed with a wide range of books(Calculus, Differential Equations, Economics etc).
The Department is expected to move into it's state-of-the-art building which is a part of the larger College of Science Tower in the 2008/2009 academic year. The new building located next to the Physics block would consist of some state-of-the-art classrooms, teaching facilities and more office buildings for the lecturers.
COMPUTERS AND TEACHING AID/FACILITIES
The Department has projectors for classroom demonstration. The department's computer laboratory is equipped with 40 Intel Core-Duo computers which are managed by a unix powered HP ProLiant ML370 G5 server.
These machines are fully Linux installed with the popular Linux OS, UBUNTU(Gutsy Gibbon). The 40 computers employ virtualization enviroment to run other operating systems within the Unix distro.
Some modern simulations ranging from Computational/Applied Mathematics to Theoretical Mathematics are run on these machines. In the 2008/2009 academic year, the Department is expected to receive a boost of over 200 IBM Lenovo machines thanks to the collaboration between UNC-Chapel Hill and the Department of Mathematics,KNUST.
The Department would also be having classroom sessions/lectures via Internet-based Video Conferencing from UNC-Chapel Hill. This would also start next academic year. We have already carried out some feasibility studies with a Polycom Video Conferencing equipment donated to us by UNC.
